Hemis is the largest national park in India, covering 4,400 km².
It has one of the highest densities of snow leopards in the world.
The park is adjacent to the famous Hemis Monastery, one of Ladakh's most important Buddhist centres.
Tibetan wolves, Eurasian brown bears, Tibetan wild ass (kiang), and bharal (blue sheep) are also found here.
